5 Steps to Creating Powerful Vignettes

Basically stated, visual merchandising is the art of grouping together products with the purpose of being visually interesting. If customers can picture the item in their life, and they like that picture you created, they are more likely to buy it.

The Impact of Visual Merchandising

Creating small-scale vignettes around the store will lead customers on a journey of discovery. In the meantime, you will be silently upselling to them.

Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Location, Location, Location

Decide where you will set up your vignette(s).

If you decide to put together only one vignette, place it close to the store entrance for maximum visibility and impact. If you can create multiple vignettes, position them strategically throughout the store.

By leading people through the store on an optimized sales path, customers get a chance to explore each department within your store while still having an enjoyable shopping experience.

Step 2: Create a Cohesive Story

Choose a theme and/or a colour scheme for the vignette. Spring Sale? Store anniversary? Summer Celebration? Christmas? Use your vignette to convey an emotion, desire, or a story without having to spell it out for your shoppers.

Step 3: Group Items With Purpose

Choose the products you want to feature.

  1. Start with the larger items. Make sure you have a variety of heights and surfaces where smaller home décor pieces can be displayed. Sofa tables, nesting tables, coffee tables, accent chairs work great together.
  2. Find other home décor items in your store that will contribute to the story. You can repeat the same item multiple times; especially when it comes to smaller accent pieces.
  3. Make sure you use textiles (pillows, throws, small rugs) as they connect the pieces together. Use flowers, leaves or branches to complete your displays.

Step 4: Ensure the Message is Strong

Layer, add or take away items until it looks right. Remember; items look best in groups of three, and asymmetry adds tension (the good kind!).

Step back and look at your vignette. Does it tell a story or sell to a lifestyle? Keep adding or removing elements until it does.

Step 5: Make That Sale!

Ensure all the items in the vignette have visible price tags, so customers realize that they are for sale.

Enjoy the benefits and upsells your vignette will bring; now all you have to do is change it up often. And don’t be afraid to experiment – you never know what will happen!
