As evidenced by the last couple of months, there is a clear downward trend that has been going for a while now in terms of unit volume.
Let’s take a closer look, and also try to find some products that are beating the expectations for the month of June:
Stronger Demand Categories
- One of the only instances where there’s actual growth is in top load washers. These are up 8% vs the same period last year, and even up 0.3% year to date;
- Wall ovens are not necessarily the most popular choice when it comes to cooking, but they’re a healthy 5.9% over their target for the year;
- Despite being down for the current period, chest freezers 14,5 cu.ft. and over are up 12.8% YTD vs last year (a stark contrast to the -27.8% YTD for freezers as a whole);
- 1- & 2-door top freezer refrigerators are slightly up (0.8%) from last year due in part to a healthy 8.3% increase in units sold in June 2023 vs. June 2022;
- Compact refrigerators still show a growth of 14.8% in 2023, now up to more than 70 000 units year to date (up from 61 784 in 2022).
On the Decline
- Even with a spike in portable dishwashers for June, the category itself still ended the month with a -17.5% compared to the same period last year;
- Gas ranges continue to be put aside by consumers, seeing a drop of almost 50% compared to the same period last year. To date, they’re also down a huge amount (-46.9%) with only 36 830 units this year (compared to 69 370 at this time in 2022);
- Cooktops are also hit by a drop in units sold, as evidenced by their -6.5% numbers YTD versus 2022;
- Microwaves maintained their 2022 trend in June, but are still -16.1% year to date.
- Wine coolers are still -23.6% year to date, in spite of the fact that June saw an increase in units sold.
